Alright so.. Long story short dad took my jeep up to the cabin Friday, heard a lower end knocking in the 4.0 but didn't think much of it at the time. I get back last night and go to move the jeep and now it's knocking even more
Am I looking at a new engine now? Seems like then infamous 4 litre death knock...

Where should I open her up? Lower end? Unfortunately a rebuild would not be in the forseable future but a used engine maybe to get me by.

EDIT: also, I am currently running Royal purple that I got from the Christmas auction. Should I swith to another oil ?

Drain the oil pan into a clean bucket and see what's in the oil first. Then remove the pan. You will be able I see all of the lower end there. See if you can see any marks in the casting or on the connecting rods.


IMO if you just need to replace the crank or some bushings that's gonna be a lot easier and quicker than an engine replacement.

if you can swing it matty, either get a used motor and rebuild it or rebuild the one you have. buying a used motor is a stop gap, your just buying a ticking time bomb. I know its expensive but worth the investment. Talk to Kevin at the shop, he has a great guy for all the machining of block, etc. same guy that did Marc's Jeep.

^ what he said...the place is on Hamilton mountain. Athenia Machine. Does great work. You disassemble and clean then take it to them for machine work/new parts. Get it back and reassemble. Do a proper break in and you are set. Cheaper than a replacement, much more reliable than used. Don't quote me, but probably around $1000.

I drained the oil and well that's all I need to see. There are metal chunks and it's pretty shinny as well. I'm now getting o2 circuit high codes suddenly as well.
I'll be parking the heep for now.

Unfortunately the carnage looks like some piston rings mixed in. I'll be doing a compression test tomorrow.
